Low Waged/Unwaged – Pay What You Can
Your chance to see SIX of the UK’s best spoken word performers.
Spoken word is the new rock’n’roll. It’s loud and belligerent, it’s authentic and streetwise, it’s scary and it’s laugh out loud funny.
It’s like the best fairground ride you’ve ever been on, it’s like the loudest, punkiest gig you’ve ever seen, it’s like watching your favourite band, comedian, actor and writer all in one go.
The six of the best are –
Jimmy Andrex performs his poetry all over the UK either with or without music. Black Horse Poet of the Year on two occasions, he has published two collections and three albums. Jimmy’s work is “angry, clever and articulate.” Jimmy co-founded Red Shed Readings, makes radio for ELFM and has been on BBC 6 Music.
Hannah Davies is a playwright, theatre-maker and spoken word artist based in North Yorkshire. Hannah is a multi-slam winning poet and Associate Artist at York’s leading spoken word night, Say Owt. Hannah has performed at leading spoken word nights across the UK and her latest collection “Dolls” is a fierce and tender collection about womanhood, motherhood, feminism and survival. Hannah is a spellbinding storyteller and her writing is warm, lyrical and bold.
Jay Mitra is an award winning punk poet and artist based in Hull/Manchester. Born in India but raised in Yorkshire, they have spent their life merging two cultures into one five-foot body. Finding solace in punk, their passion-fuelled poetry tackles taboo topics with wit, grit and sensitivity. Jay won the Oooh Beehive UK Slam Championship, the Margate Bookie poetry award, was the Shambala Festival Slam winner and Roundhouse Slam finalist.
Matt Nicholson is a poet from East Yorkshire, he has been widely published, including four collections of poetry. He is widely published and commissioned, most recently By the Humber Mouth Festival, and has performed all over the UK. He writes poems that are dark and sinister, tender and moving, but always honest. His work is relevant and relatable and his craft precise and finely tuned.
Ian Killen is a writer, performer and storyteller. One of the greatest storytellers around, Ian takes you into a world of sex, drugs and rock’n’roll, of indie bands and record shops, of petty crime and teenage dreams. His stories are funny, poignant, touching and emotional, with laugh out loud punchlines, wistful musings and beautifully crafted storylines.
Jim Higo is a writer, poet and performer. Multiple slam winner, BBC commissioned and writer and performer of numerous critically acclaimed poetry/comedy shows. Hilarious, furious and brilliant, one of the best poetry performers in the country. With side-splitting poems and rants dipped in dripping and cynicism, he leaves no pretension un-shamed and no pomposity un-pricked.
