Based in Newcastle, UK, Mat Hunsley is a songwriter who blends folk and alternative influences into a sound and story uniquely his own. Balancing music with the demands of medical training, Mat has always prioritised his career as a doctor. Now fully qualified, he steps into the spotlight with his debut album, supported by the PRS Open Fund.

His music explores personal and universal themes, inviting listeners to reflect on the world around them. Mat’s musical journey began in his late teens, inspired by artists like Ben Howard, Nathaniel Rateliff, and Bon Iver. Teaching himself guitar and exploring open tunings, he discovered colourful chords and melodies that formed the foundation of his songwriting.

2025 marked a breakthrough year for Mat, highlighted by a unique headline show at North Shields’ Three Tanners Bank, where audiences were invited to witness live recordings in the round. He also received heavy support from the likes of BBC Introducing, and successfully launched a Kickstarter for his debut album, exceeding its ambitious goal and building strong momentum ahead of the release.
