Deputy Labour leader Tom Watson has revealed his cunning trick to get into the New Adelphi Club for free while he was a Hull student.

The number two to leader Jeremy Corbyn studied politics at the University of Hull in the early 1990s, and said he “loved” his time on the Humber’s north bank.

A music buff, Mr Watson said Hull fed his fascination with bands and live acts.

Even his associates were music fans – the politician shared a house on Cranbook Avenue in west Hull with musician Neil Codling, who would go on to become keyboard player in alternative rock band Suede.

Such was his love of going to gigs at the quirky Adelphi, Mr Watson moved next door to the converted house on De Grey Street, which narrowly survived the Luftwaffe bombing raids during World War Two.

“The owner is the same guy [Paul Jackson] and he is a fantastic man,” continued Mr Watson.

“I mean, the people who run these music venues, they do it on a shoe string – they are cultural leaders in their own right.
