The Hull to Barnsley Railway line which runs directly behind The Adelphi Club was built to connect Hull Docks to the coal fields of South Yorkshire.

“Coal Train To Hatfield Main” by the Hull band The Housemartins, was released as a B-side on their debut single, Flag Day, in October 1985.

Independent grassroots venues are the first rung on the music ladder and seldom break even. The Adelphi is honoured to have patrons like Paul, Jarvis Cocker, Jeffrey Lewis, Philip Selway, Idles and This is the Kit to name a few. Check out some of the unknown artists who have played on the tiny Adelphi stage and gone on to headline stages at Glastonbury. We’re humbled by their continued support.

The Housemartins were passionate supporters of the miners during the 1984-1985 UK miners’ strike and the band frequently played benefit gigs for striking pitmen.

COAL NOT DOLE
The independent statutory inquiry into the 1984 clashes at the Orgreave Coking Plant was officially announced by Home Secretary Yvette Cooper in July 2025 and formally launched in March 2026. Chaired by the Bishop of Sheffield, the Rt Revd Dr Pete Wilcox, the inquiry is examining the police and government planning, the events of the day, and the subsequent discredited prosecutions of 95 miners.

The inquiry was set up under the Inquiries Act 2005 to thoroughly examine historical evidence and seek accountability for the events of June 18, 1984. The probe is scrutinising police and government planning, charging decisions, and the immediate aftermath and lasting impacts of the violence. The Chair is supported by a panel of independent experts including Baroness Mary Bousted (former senior trade union leader) and Dr Angie Sutton-Vane (historian with expertise in police records and historical accountability).

As a full statutory inquiry, the panel has the power to compel relevant government departments and police forces to hand over documents and evidence.
