A high voltage mix of catchy reggae, flowing hip-hop mc-ing, screaming blues guitar solos, funky horn riffs, smooth soulful vocals with elements of Ska, Rock and Gypsy thrown in for good measure. Welcome to Unknown Era!
Kane Ashmore has been ripping up his mix of Balkan Hiphop, Reggae, Breaks and Beats on the Nottingham scene for several years, earning himself a strong reputation around the midlands as both an acoustic performer and MC. In late 2014 he decided to form a full live band under the name Unknown Era.
Recruiting close friends Josh Crofts and Lewis Brade on lead guitar and bass, Kane asked Gaz Pee (formerly of Breadchasers) to join the band, Gaz injects not only a wealth of experience but also a high energy Ska influence that comes across in live shows, this mixed with Lewis’s solid bass lines and Josh’s bluesy and outright crazy lead riffs set the band up nicely. Gaz recruited drummer Andy Barnard, a well known local DJ, who has proven he is also the perfect tight yet expressive drummer for the band.
After playing a debut show at The Maze in their native Nottingham on New Years Eve 2014, the band were joined by two female vocalists, Emily and Mollie, and a brass section, Laurence on Trumpet and Max on Trombone.
Since the turn their debut 9 piece performance in January 2015 the band has gone on to rave reviews and built a impressive local fan base after gigs with Origin One, Gypsy Hill, Hallouminati, Bendigo, The Afterdark Movement and Chris Murray.
They have already won over fans in Nottingham, Derby, Leicester and Sheffield and played several local festivals, going down a storm at every event they grace.
In November 2015 the band released their self titled debut EP. The official launch party at Rough Trade in Nottingham was sold out and so far all reviews of the EP have been very positive.
The band’s high energy live shows mixed with their catchy song writing that mixes and fuses genres seems to be a winning formula, and 2016 promises to be a busy and interesting year for Unknown Era.
